Why Mulch?

At Jim’s Trees Dianella it is our policy to recycle everything we  possibly can.  By chipping the tree waste we reduce costs for our customers by saving on expensive disposal fees, and at the same time we help the environment.

Mulching is one of the best things you the home owner can do for the health of your trees, and reduction of water bills. Good mulch can reduce water loss, help control weeds, stabilise soil, and as it decays it becomes part of the soil.

We produce premium quality garden mulch and deliver it to your garden. Call or email us for a competitive quote.

If you want to save as much money as possible check out this free mulch website. The quality may vary and you usually have to wait but, hey it’s free!

Making Mulch

When we remove trees the very first thing we do is put them through our 4 tonne Bandit brush chipper. This machine can take logs bigger than power poles or branches as small as rose cuttings  and turn them into woodchips. By planning the work schedule carefully we are able to divide the woodchips into premium grade green mulch and second grade.

Premium grade green mulch is sold in 5, 10 and 15m3 loads and we will deliver up to 100km from the GPO (extra fees applied based on distance).

Second grade mulch contains palm waste, vines and succulent plants. This work is done on Fridays (we have Palm Friday every week!) and then taken to green waste recycling on Saturdays for further processing into peat mulch.

Mulch too deep and not spread wide enough. Water will run off the sloped surface.

How to Mulch

·         Apply mulch directly to the ground. Do not put plastic, newspaper, cardboard, carpet or any other barrier material below it. The idea is the mulch decomposes over time and is topped up annually.

·         Use a mixture of plant material including leaves twigs and bark, not just wood chips. These lighter items break down more quickly whilst the wood chips will remain as part of the next layer.

·         Keep the mulch between 50 and 100mm deep. Too little wont help and too much can promote fungal growth and restrict water flow.

·         Top up your mulch annually. Add a little each year just as though the trees were in a forest. Keep the total amount in that 50-100mm depth range.

·         Avoid creating mulch volcanoes (like this)
